چکیده

Recently completed Hα surveys of large portions of the sky can be used to create maps of the free-free intensity distribution at high Galactic latitude that are independent of the spectral fits to the CMB data. This provides an opportunity to test the accuracy of the spectral fitting procedures and to search for other sources of Galactic forground contamination that could be confused spectrally with the free-free, such as spinning dust grains. The Wisconsin Hα Mapper (WHAM) survey has sampled the sky north of declination −30 • at about one degree angular resolution and has revealed that, except for a few isolated regions of enhanced emission, ∆T f f (30 GHz) ∼ < 30 µK at Galactic latitudes near 15 • , decreasing to ∆T f f (30 GHz) ∼ < 4 µK at latitudes above 50 •. Also in progress are Hα surveys that sample the sky at higher angular resolution.

Astrophysical components separation of COBE-DMR 4yr data with FastICA

We present an application of the fast Independent Component Analysis FastICA method to the COBE-DMR 4yr data. Although the signal-to-noise ratio in the COBE-DMR data is typically ∼ 1, the approach is able to extract the CMB signal with high confidence when working at high galactic latitudes. However, the foreground emission components have too low a S/N ratio to be reconstructed by this method ...

A Correlation between Balmer H α Emission and Infrared Cirrus

A 13×13 image of Balmer Hα emission at galactic latitude -65 is presented. Sensitivity is limited in part by confusion: the peak-to-valley anisotropy of the Hα surface brightness is ∼0.2 Rayleighs on angular scales of 0.1 to 1.0. The morphology of the Hα emission is similar to that of the 100 μm emission previously observed by the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). A point-by-point compari...

Galactic Free-free Emission and Hα

We review present understanding of Galactic free–free emission and its possible importance to CMB fluctuation measurements. Current results, from both " direct " observations in the microwave band and from Hα studies, suggest that this foreground does not represent a serious obstacle to mapping the CMB; however, this is based on limited information and we emphasize the need for more exhaustive ...

The Diffuse Galactic Gamma-Ray Emission Model for GLAST LAT

Diffuse emission from the Milky Way dominates the γ-ray sky. About 80% of the high-energy luminosity of the Milky Way comes from processes in the interstellar medium. The Galactic diffuse emission traces interactions of energetic particles, primarily protons and electrons, with the interstellar gas and radiation field, thus delivering information about cosmic-ray spectra and interstellar mass i...

Radio Frequency Foreground Emission and the Separation of Microwave Anisotropies from Foreground Contamination

The effects on CMB measurements of foreground contamination due to synchrotron radiation, free-free emission and discrete sources are considered. Estimates of the level and power spectrum of the Galactic fluctuations are made using low frequency maps and recent Tenerife data. New methods for achieving a frequency-based separation of Galactic and CMB components are discussed, and a positive/nega...
